Elementor #2643

Lucas Keuther knew how to build cabinets. That was never the problem.

About 18 months ago he walked into a BRAG meeting as a 26-year-old business owner, a year and a half into running Next Generation Artisans, his custom cabinetry and millwork shop. He was a one-man operation. He had the skill, the standards, and more than a decade of production shop experience behind the work. What he did not have was a network.

“I was just starting to find out how important networking is to the success of a business,” he says. “I struggled with this as a natural introvert.”

Eighteen months later, his sales have quadrupled and he runs a team of four.

The part nobody warns you about

Most small business owners start a business because they are good at something. Woodworking. Dentistry. Bookkeeping. Landscaping. The craft is the easy part.

Then the business asks you to do a dozen things the craft never prepared you for. Financing. Hiring. Pricing. Contracts. Insurance. Knowing which of those to solve first.

For a lot of owners, especially quieter ones, the standard advice is to go network. Show up at breakfasts. Hand out cards. Work the room. For an introvert who would rather be in the shop, that advice lands somewhere between exhausting and useless.

That is the gap BRAG was built to close.

Not a networking group

BRAG is not a room full of people trying to sell each other things. It is a group of 15 or more advisors from banking, law, HR, real estate, IT, insurance, accounting, and marketing who sit down with three business owners a month and work on their actual problems.

Guests apply, present for 15 minutes, and then take questions from the full advisor panel. There is no cost. There is no membership. There is no pitch at the end.

“BRAG immediately let me in and connected me with mentor resources that have constantly been checking in and helping me pursue my potential over the last 18 months,” Lucas says.

That word, constantly, is the part that matters. One good morning is nice. Eighteen months of people following up is what changes a business.

One advisor who saw it

Every guest tends to connect with one or two advisors who really lock in on their situation. For Lucas, that was Joe Moser of Rockland Trust, BRAG’s banking advisor.

“Joe Moser, in particular, saw my vision instantly and has helped me refine and build it out structurally for growth.”

Vision is not the hard part for a talented owner. Structure is. Knowing when you can afford a second set of hands. Knowing how to price so growth does not bury you. Knowing what a bank needs to see before you ask. That is the work that turns a good shop into a growing company.

What actually changed

The numbers speak plainly. Since that first meeting, Lucas has quadrupled his sales and grown from a one-man shop to a team of four.

Next Generation Artisans now handles custom cabinetry and millwork for residential clients, commercial millwork and fabrication for offices, retail, restaurants, and professional interiors, and one-off specialty builds. The company serves Greater Boston, MetroWest, and surrounding Massachusetts communities, with what Lucas describes as large shop capability and small shop care.

The reason it works

Here is the line from Lucas we keep coming back to:

“Never once has anyone on this team asked for anything from me. They genuinely want to help and support people in the hardest parts of their path.”

That is the whole model. The advisors are practicing professionals who volunteer their time. They are not there to close anybody. They are there because most small business owners are trying to solve hard problems alone, and they do not have to be.

If you are where Lucas was

You do not need a polished deck. You do not need to be comfortable working a room. You need a real problem and 15 minutes.

BRAG meets the third Thursday of every month in Hanover, MA, from 8:30 to 10:00 AM. Up to three businesses can present each month.

The application takes about two minutes! It’s free and businesses of all sizes and types welcome.
